Recreation

Fresh and salt water fishing is abundant in the area, the St. Marks Wildlife Refuge has world-famous bird watching. This park is also a famous autumn gathering point for millions of Monarch Butterflies waiting to migrate across the Gulf to Mexico. The St. Marks Lighthouse, located in the park, was built in 1831 and still serves as a navigational guide to mariners plying the coastal water.

For those who prefer faster moving entertainment, bicycling opportunities are exceptional. The St. Marks to Tallahassee bike trail, 16 miles in length, follows the route of the now extinct St. Marks Railroad, Florida’s oldest, built in 1836. The St. Marks Lighthouse and Wakulla Springs are two destinations within easy reach of The Sweet Magnolia by bicycle.

Transient Boaters can take advantage of local marinas within a block or two of the inn. The Wakulla and St. Marks rivers are an excellent sources for freshwater fishing. It`s just a short trip down river to the Gulf of Mexico for saltwater fishing, and when in season, this is one of Florida`s best scalloping areas.

If canoeing is more your speed, you can spend hours paddling along the pristine banks of the two rivers. The charm and beauty of the area, plus the friendly attitude of the “locals” will make you wish you did not have to return to the real world.

Boat rentals are available locally, and can show you an undiscovered Florida you won`t soon forget. The St. Marks and Wakulla rivers are a quiet sanctuary for all types of wildlife (including you). The Gulf is also easily accessible from both rivers.
